MUDRAS

HISTORY OF MUDRAS

The term "mudra" is a Sanskrit word that means gesture. Mudras are the hand gestures or positions used to channel the flow of energy in our body in a certain way they are practiced during meditation. There are different types of mudras each aimed at channelling energy to a specific area of the body. Therefore, yoga mudras can create a flow of energy throughout one's body. Combining mudras, meditation is a powerful method that gives us maximum results.

The history of yoga brings us back to prehistoric times when ancient Egyptian and Eastern civilizations were established. When the early civilizations grew, images of various gods and goddesses commonly showed them sitting or standing with their hands in one of many mudras. In India, mudras are used in ritual dance and also mudras are used to control our stress and intonation. As religion developed worldwide and branched into different forms, many new ideologies still incorporated mudras into rituals and meditative practices.

Traditionally, mudras have been used in yoga and meditation practices. They are also used in classical Indian dances, religious icons, Tantric practices, devotional rituals, and visualization or meditation practices. Bharatnatyam is a form of classical Indian dance using mudras, which are used to tell religious tales through the dancers’ body movements and hand placements.

Bharatnatyam is a form of classical Indian dance using mudras, which are used to convey emotions, express a story or meaning, and add an extra layer of meaning to the dance performance.

HOW DO MUDRAS WORK?

Our universe is made up of five basic elements. our body represents these elements through fingers.

1) Thumb-Fire (agni mudra)

2) Index- Air (vayu mudra)

3) Middle-Space (Akash mudra)

4) Ring- Earth (Prithvi mudra)

5) Little- Water(jal mudra)

These are also called Panchmahabhuta.

Our fingers continuously emit various vital energy, and there is a connection between the nerve endings on the finger Yogis believe that when different fingers form mudras, they start electromagnetic currents in the body and stimulate our consciousness, creating a distance between our unnecessary thoughts and improving our health.
