Tat Tvam Asi is great Mahavakya from our ancient scriptures which means you are the pure soul, you are the real existence itself. In Sanskrit Tat Tvam Asi means

Tat(that), Tvam(you), Asi(you are).

This Mantra is referred to from the 6th Adhaya from Chandogaya Upanishad of Sam Veda.

Katha of Rishi Uddalak and Shwetaketu.

There was a saint called Rishi Uddalaka and his son called shwetaketu. When Shwetaketu was a small child, his father felt that his mind was not engaged in reading the Vedas so Rishi Uddalak got nervous. Rishi Uddalak feels that if the son does not learn the Vedas, he will go away from the Brahmin tradition, so he panics and urges him to study the Vedas seriously and if needed, take the food company of the teacher. When the son hears this, he obeys his fathers and leaves the house for the next 10-12 years and then starts studying under the guidance of a guru. 

When 10-12 years pass and he studies very well, he returns home and goes to his father. But this time when he comes home, something seems to have changed, but not many days have passed, and his father Rishi Uddalak comes to know that the child has become proud of his knowledge, that men he has started feeling that he has studied everything, that now he does not need to study anything new, so rishi uddalak hw will know about everything in the world. 

Shwetketu does not understand anything he tells his father, you are talking very illogical, such a thing has not been studied and such a thing does not exist, then his father says, why? Have you not seen the clay outside the Potter's house? If you know everything about the clay, whatever the potter makes in his life, you will always recognize it. Similarly, if you have seen gold at a goldsmith's place and you have, acquired knowledge of gold, you have become aware of its properties, then you will easily recognize all the ornaments made by the goldsmith. Similarly, Brahman(Soul) also is knowledge, if you everything about Brahman, then whatever you see in the world, you can easily recognize it because everything contains Brahman(Soul). And there is Brahman within you and this is where he said 'Tat Tvam Asi.'

Tat Vam Asi In Advaita Darshan 

Adi Shankaracharya was the first Acharya in Sanskrit Acharya is known As a guide or Instructor) in Advaita Darshan, he started this understanding of that as (Brahman) team as (jiva) Adhi Shankara Acharya profounds that Brahman is the absolute cause of the universe. According to Adi Shankaracharya, there are two creations Material Cause and Instrumental Cause.

Like when a pot is made, there are two things needed to make a pot, first clay and a potter, the clay is the material cause, and the potter because he desires the pitcher is be made his will, so he is called instrumental cause, so there has called brahman. Adhi Shankaracharya picked up two main important from the story of Rishi Uddalak and Shweataketu.

 

This means Rishi Uddalak tells his son Sweataketu that when there was nothing, not even this universe there was only that sat (truth), which means there was only existence and there was nothing else and a time came when this truth, this existence, desired to become something else, and since this desire came to the existence itself. 

That's why Adi Shankaracharya picked up from this story that when the desire comes to existence itself then Brahman must be the instrumental cause Rishi Uddalak told his son that the potter's clay that he must have seen, would help him recognize everything being made of clay if we consider clay as brahman,  then brahman itself is taking shape. into other things means he is the material as well.

Why tat tvam asi was made

So Tat Tvam Asi protects the 1 Mahavakya so that no one should get the ego of I am the only one in this world and I know everything in this world.

Tat Tvam Asi guides us towards our self-realization and self-purpose about who we are sometimes we fail to. understand ourselves and think what is our purpose the more thoughts we get about one thing is our purpose. We try to find Something which is hidden in our self. Please don't relate to your self those things are false illusions made by us and doubting our potential. Your karma appears in your thoughts and then in actions if you are doing some illegal things that will harm us, not others if you try to cheat someone you are cheating on yourself.

Sometimes many people after becoming successful become arrogant and egoistic you are not the only soul who created your success many souls helped you out in your bad times and made you whatever you are today. If one is bad you are as good as others it's only a matter of thoughts that tend you to do bad things to others. Realizing what's made for you and what's within you will make you happy more than your success. Success is a part of life if you work hard with honesty, loyalty, and sincerity you are going to be successful but asking yourself self are you trying to be a better human being or a good person will lead you to clarity, vision, and better understanding.
